Cycling Marathon in Bukhara promotes environmental awareness and sustainable mobility

More than 100 preschool students participated in the VII Cycling Marathon in Bukhara on 5 June, World Environment Day, to promote environmental awareness and sustainable mobility among young people.

The event was organized by the OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Uzbekistan in co-operation with the Ministry of Preschool and School Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Khokimiyat of Bukhara Region, and the Cycling Federation of Uzbekistan.

The marathon brought together children from preschool educational institutions, who covered the distance on balance bikes specially designed for young riders.

During the opening ceremony, speakers highlighted the importance of environmental education and the role of everyday choices in supporting environmental sustainability. They also emphasized that promoting cycling and other eco-friendly modes of transport can contribute to reducing environmental impacts while encouraging healthy lifestyles.

The event programme included cycling activities, as well as educational and cultural components marking World Environment Day.

"I am glad that I took part in the bike marathon. Bicycles don't make the air dirty, and if we all ride them, our city will be cleaner. It was so cool to get a prize!" said one 7-year-old marathon participant.

Environmental education and awareness-raising among youth are important components of the OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Uzbekistan's activities within the Environmental and Economic Dimension of security. Through such initiatives, the OSCE supports efforts to promote environmental responsibility and sustainable practices among young generations.
